    Heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification bacterium isolated from anaerobic/anoxic/oxic treatment system

    A special strain of Alcaligenes denitrificans, designated as WY200811, with heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification ability was novel isolated from an anaerobic/anoxic/oxic treatment system and characterized. The average ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) and TN (total nitrogen) removal rates of the strain were 0.026 and 0.028 gN/g·Cell·h. Under the environmental conditions of 22% DO and C/N ratio of 5, the ultimate efficiencies of nitrification and denitrification were 57.0 and 57.3%, respectively. The pH in the medium was maintained between 6.0 and 7.0. The novel strain can rapidly reduce the ammonia to nitrogen gas without nitrite accumulation. The WY200811 can be used in a full-scale anaerobic/anoxic/oxic treatment system for efficiency in heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification.Key words: Heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification, Alcaligenes denitrificans, nitrogen balance

    Zero-Annotation Object Detection with Web Knowledge Transfer

    Object detection is one of the major problems in computer vision, and has been extensively studied. Most of the existing detection works rely on labor-intensive supervision, such as ground truth bounding boxes of objects or at least image-level annotations. On the contrary, we propose an object detection method that does not require any form of human annotation on target tasks, by exploiting freely available web images. In order to facilitate effective knowledge transfer from web images, we introduce a multi-instance multi-label domain adaption learning framework with two key innovations. First of all, we propose an instance-level adversarial domain adaptation network with attention on foreground objects to transfer the object appearances from web domain to target domain. Second, to preserve the class-specific semantic structure of transferred object features, we propose a simultaneous transfer mechanism to transfer the supervision across domains through pseudo strong label generation. With our end-to-end framework that simultaneously learns a weakly supervised detector and transfers knowledge across domains, we achieved significant improvements over baseline methods on the benchmark datasets.Comment: Accepted in ECCV 201

    Influence of corruption on economic growth rate and foreign investments

    In order to investigate whether government regulations against corruption can affect the economic growth of a country, we analyze the dependence between Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita growth rates and changes in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI). For the period 1999-2004 on average for all countries in the world, we find that an increase of CPI by one unit leads to an increase of the annual GDP per capita by 1.7 %. By regressing only European transition countries, we find that Δ\DeltaCPI = 1 generates increase of the annual GDP per capita by 2.4 %. We also analyze the relation between foreign direct investments received by different countries and CPI, and we find a statistically significant power-law functional dependence between foreign direct investment per capita and the country corruption level measured by the CPI.     A Meta-analytical Comparison of Naive Bayes and Random Forest for Software Defect Prediction

    Is there a statistical difference between Naive Bayes and Random Forest in terms of recall, f-measure, and precision for predicting software defects? By utilizing systematic literature review and meta-analysis, we are answering this question. We conducted a systematic literature review by establishing criteria to search and choose papers, resulting in five studies. After that, using the meta-data and forest-plots of five chosen papers, we conducted a meta-analysis to compare the two models.     A study on nitrogen removal efficiency of Pseudomonas stutzeri strains isolated from an anaerobic/anoxic/oxic wastewater treatment process

    In order to improve the nitrogen removal efficiency in an anaerobic/anoxic/oxic treatment plant, a strain with high nitrification and denitrification capability was isolated from a specific anaerobic/anoxic/oxic treatment process. The characteristics of isolate were experimentally analyzed. By using the nitrogen balance method, the total nitrogen loss was calculated to be 40.1% (w/w) when the carbon source was citric acid with a C/N ratio of 5. Meanwhile, the isolated strain was identified by 16S rDNA to be a Pseudomonas stutzeri with a similarity of 99%. Varying the initial TN, the C/N, the pH value and the ambient temperature in the reaction system, the efficiency of nitrogen removal was studied. The results showed that the highest efficiency occurred when the C/N was 12, the pH value was 7 and the temperature was 32°C. The results were also compared to the practically monitoring data coming with a good agreement. Consequently, it is viable to improve the nitrogen removal efficiency by varying the reaction conditions

    Quantitative relations between corruption and economic factors

    We report quantitative relations between corruption level and economic factors, such as country wealth and foreign investment per capita, which are characterized by a power law spanning multiple scales of wealth and investments per capita. These relations hold for diverse countries, and also remain stable over different time periods. We also observe a negative correlation between level of corruption and long-term economic growth. We find similar results for two independent indices of corruption, suggesting that the relation between corruption and wealth does not depend on the specific measure of corruption. The functional relations we report have implications when assessing the relative level of corruption for two countries with comparable wealth, and for quantifying the impact of corruption on economic growth and foreign investments.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure

    Quasiparticle spectra in the vicinity of a d-wave vortex

    We discuss the evolution of the local quasiparticle spectral density and the related tunneling conductance measurable by the scanning tunneling microscope, as a function of distance r and angle \theta from the vortex core in a d_{x^2-y^2} superconductor. We consider the effects of electronic disorder and of a strongly anisotropic tunneling matrix element, and show that in real materials they will likely obscure the ~1/r asymptotic tail in the zero-bias tunneling conductance expected from the straightforward semiclassical analysis. We also give a prediction for the tunneling conductance anisotropy around the vortex core and establish a connection to the structure of the tunneling matrix element.Comment: 9 pages REVTeX + 5 PostScript figures.     Geometric discord and Measurement-induced nonlocality for well known bound entangled states

    We employ geometric discord and measurement induced nonlocality to quantify non classical correlations of some well-known bipartite bound entangled states, namely the two families of Horodecki's (242\otimes 4, 333\otimes 3 and 444\otimes 4 dimensional) bound entangled states and that of Bennett etal's in 333\otimes 3 dimension. In most of the cases our results are analytic and both the measures attain relatively small value. The amount of quantumness in the 444\otimes 4 bound entangled state of Benatti etal and the 282\otimes 8 state having the same matrix representation (in computational basis) is same.
